Organization of Information
 

Have you ever thought you might enjoy working for Google? Engaged in organizing metadata? Developing thesauri and taxonomy? Or, cataloging library resources? This course of study is designed to guide SLIS students in developing specialized knowledge and skills related to the organization of information objects including: knowledge of and skills in the theory and principles of information organization, understanding of user needs and information seeking behavior, awareness and use of local and global standards for organizing information, proficient use of technologies for organizing information, and application of research findings.

A student who pursues this course of study may be qualified to apply for the following job titles currently occurring in job ads: Technical Services Librarian, Metadata Librarian, Cataloger, Indexer, Digital Projects & Catalog Management Librarian, Catalog Maintenance Librarian, Data Quality Expert, Information Resources Specialist, Digital Collections Librarian.

Competencies:

This course of study prepares students to:

· Apply the principles and best practices of information organization,

· Demonstrate a commitment to user needs and information seeking behavior as we organize information,

· Leverage local and global standards for controlling and managing information resources,

· Proficiently use technologies to organize information resources for access, and,

· Interpret and apply research findings from the library and information science field and related disciplines to improve information organization and access for users.

SLIS Courses:

SLIS offers a variety of courses that focus on the organization of information. Students interested in this course of study will take the four required courses plus the six highly recommended courses and two of the elective courses. The student will consult with their advisor to plan a course of study that will best meet the student's personal and professional needs.
