Tenure-Track Position in School Library Media

The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at The Catholic University of America, seeks an assistant professor in school library media who is dedicated to providing a student-centered degree program for individuals pursuing a master's degree in library and information science within the specialty of school library media. The school library media program within SLIS is the only program of its kind in Washington, D.C.. This position offers a tremendous opportunity for the selected candidate to take an active role in maintaining and growing this program to serve the public school and the profession, and to develop new and innovative approaches to the delivery of this program locally and regionally. If you have a love of teaching, experience as a school library media specialist and a desire to combine teaching, research and service within a service-oriented, religious institution, this is the position you have been seeking.

Essential Duties:

The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., invites applications and nominations for a tenure-track, 8.5-month position (with opportunities for summer teaching) at the assistant, associate or full professor rank for its NCATE-accredited graduate program in school librarianship.

The successful candidate will teach face-to-face (and in the near future in a distributed environment) courses in the school library program. In addition to teaching graduate courses in school librarianship, the selected candidate will serve as the program coordinator, which includes overseeing licensure and accreditation related to school library media, advising students, coordinating the activities of the practicum coordinators working part-time at SLIS, conducting research and other scholarly activities and providing service to the university and to neighboring school divisions within Washington, D.C. and Virginia to form partnerships and collaborative relationships.

Qualifications:

Applicants must possess effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; a doctorate in Library and Information Science, or equivalent degree by May 2008; demonstrated teaching ability in either K-12 or higher education; certification and licensure as a school library media specialist; the potential to teach graduate courses in school librarianship, including children and adolescent services; research potential or a history of scholarly activities; appropriate professional experience in K-12 school libraries; demonstrated potential for coordinating a graduate program, and a record of service to the school library profession. Preference will be given to applicants who have familiarity with the curriculum in Washington, D.C. and/or Virginia K-12 schools, or those with National Teacher Certification.

The SLIS program is offered at the D.C. campus of The Catholic University of America, the Library of Congress, select courses online, and at off-campus sites in Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, and Richmond, Virginia.

Position:

Instructor for LSC 908, the Practicum for the School Library Media Program (adjunct, part-time)

Essential Duties:

The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) seeks a part-time practicum instructor to serve the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia students who are preparing for or completing their practicum experience toward their certification as School Library Media Specialists. The School Library Media program is selected by students who wish to work with young people in school libraries of public and private K-12 institutions. The Catholic University of America program is recognized by the states of Virginia and Maryland and the District of Columbia. The course of study has program accreditation by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and by the American Library Association (ALA).

The Practicum Instructor will work collaboratively with School Library Media Specialists in a K-12 setting in Maryland, Virginia and D.C. to achieve the following goals:

  1. To provide students with an opportunity to observe and practice the principles of the school library media profession under the supervision of a state certified school library media specialist.
  2. To afford students the opportunity to apply the skills, understandings and competencies gained in previous courses in the School Library Media program.
  3. To allow students to interact, observe and reflect upon the policies, usage, resources and service surrounding the school library media programs visited for the practicum experience.

The practicum instructor will perform the following duties:

  1. Identify practicum locations and materials to explain the practicum experience to prospective students.
  2. Support the students who are preparing for the practicum experience with placement assistance.
  3. Develop the materials to instruct students preparing for the practicum experience and provide the course structure for students registered for the practicum experience.
  4. Work with the School Library Media Specialists at the sites to ensure the practicum experience is progressing smoothly for both the School Library Media Specialist and the student practicum participant.
  5. Observe the practicum students on-site and provide them with guidance to ensure they complete the culminating requirement for the practicum, the combination of the work of the student at the site and the observation of the practicum coordinator, successfully.
  6. Develop the rubrics for measuring student performance in the practicum course and,
  7. Assign the grades for the practicum experience as the instructor for CUA.

This is a 10 to 15 hour a week position with lab coverage needed weekdays 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Daytime hours may be adjusted depending upon your class schedule.

LSC 555 or equivalent and WindowsXP, MS Office2003, webpage design skills.
We will train on library science and multimedia applications.
