Rachel Hinton (MSLS 2007) of Mt. Rainier, Maryland, works as a contractor at EPA's library. She and her husband Matt are excitedly expecting their second child in March.
Cristina D. Ramirez (MSLS 2005) is a Doctoral Student in the Education, Urban Services Leadership program at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). She taught Collection Development, CLSC 641 for CUA SLIS as adjunct faculty in the Fall of 2010. Cristina was re-elected to serve on American Library Association Council as a Councilor-at-Large for the term 2010-2013 and was promoted in rank to Assistant Professor as the Collection Librarian for Social & Behavioral Sciences at VCU. She is an annual reviewer for bilingual children's and young adult titles for the REFORMA Newsletter Resenas/Book Reviews. Cristina is a Co-Chair of the Multicultural Forum for the Virginia Library Association and was reappointed to serve as the University Library Services representative to the University Equity and Diversity Committee, VCU Office of the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Christine Hall (MSLS 2004), Director of the Alexandria Law Library, recently participated in the world's largest paired kidney exchange at Georgetown University Hospital. Ms. Hall was one of sixteen people who donated a kidney in the 16-way exchange, which took place over a two-week period in November, at three area hospitals. Four of the 16 donors, including Ms. Hall, were non-directed or altruistic donors, meaning they were not related to or donating on behalf of any of the 16 recipients. Ms. Hall was profiled on the NBC Nightly News report, "Making a Difference" on November 2, 2010.
She and most of the other 31 participants appeared on The Today Show the following morning. Ms. Hall, who lost 40 pounds in order to participate in the exchange, returned to work in early December, and said it was the best experience of her life.
Dr. Ken Phifer (MSLS 1983) published his memoirs in March 2010: "The First Seventy-Five Years 1934-2009: A Memoir". Copies are available at the Rockville, MD Public Library and at the Montgomery County Historical Society Library. He notes that the chapter on library school brought back fond memories as he reached back into the past.

Mindy Klasky (MSLS 1996) of Arlington, Virginia, has written the book "When Good Wishes Go Bad," the second novel of her "As You Wish" series, published in April (Mira Books).
Gary Smuckler (MSLS 1977) retired from Alexandria City Public Schools. He was a teacher in the English as a Second Language Program and taught U.S. history for immigrant students at T.C. Williams high school in Alexandria, Virginia. He has been in education for 42 years and plans to continue by volunteering.
In Memoriam: Catherine D. "Kitty" Scott (MSLS 1955) of Washington, DC, passed away on May 17, 2010. She was the former Chief Librarian and Director of the National Air and Space Museum Library (Smithsonian), and had also served as President of the Special Libraries Association from 1992-93.

Rod Atkinson (MSLS 1990) is now the Head of Research Data for the Knowledge Services Group, Congressional Research Service, Library of Congress. He will have oversight of geospatial information systems research and quantitative analysis performed for Congress. Previously he was the Head of Operations.
Kathy Kelly (MSLS 1994) has been elected to serve as Secretary on the Special Libraries Association (SLA) Government Information Division (DGI) Executive Board for 2011. She also recently published an article in Government Information Pro called "Executive Orders on Contractors Can Protect Library Workers".

Katy Rose Resnick Taylor (MSLS 2009) announces the birth of her first baby girl, Genevieve Olivia Taylor, born on June 8, 2010, in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Tisha M. Zelner (MSLS 2000) was the recipient of the University of Southern Mississippi's biennial Excellence in Librarianship Award in 2010. She was also promoted to Associate Professor, effective July 2010. She continues to serve as Head of Information Services at the university's Cook Library in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
Mathilde Rovelstad (MSLS 1960), who served as a professor of library science at Catholic University of America (CUA) for thirty years, passed away on July 2, 2010. Dr. Rovelstad had received a SLIS Lifetime Achievement Award from the SLIS Alumni Association during a celebration of the SLIS 25th anniversary as a School during 2006. With a major gift made in 2004, Dr. Rovelstad established the Mathilde & Howard Endowed Scholarship, to provide tuition assistance to academically qualified graduate students in SLIS. A memorial celebration of Dr. Rovelstad's life will be held Saturday, October 23, 2010, at 1 p.m. in the chapel at Caldwell Hall on the CUA campus.

David S. Mao (MSLS 1999) has been appointed to the newly created position of Deputy Law Librarian of Congress, in which he will manage the Library of Congress Law Library's global legal research portfolio, including the Global Legal Information Network. He previously worked for the Library of Congress Congressional Research Service.
Robyn Rebollo (MSLS 1997) was a co-presenter at the National Vivo Conference (Enabling National Networking of Scientists) in New York in August 2010. Her presentation is titled: "Building an Australian User Community for VIVO: Profiling Research Data for the Australian National Data Service." Sister Charlene Smith (MSLS 1987) has co-written "Thea's Song: The Life of Thea Bowman" (Orbis Books, 2010), the first major biography of CUA alumna Sister Thea Bowman (FSPA, MA, 1970; Ph.D. 1973), a bridgebuilder between racial groups, who has been discussed by many as a possible candidate for beatification.
Kee Malesky (MSLS 1986) is the author of "All Facts Considered, the Essential Library of Inessential Knowledge" (Wiley, 2010), a collection of interesting and unusual facts she has accumulated over two decades as a librarian at NPR. A book-signing is scheduled for October 26, 2010, 6:30 p.m., at Borders Books (18th & L Streets NW, DC).

James Patrick Timony (MSLS 2004), an Adaptive Technology Librarian at DC Public Library since 2004, is a 2010 winner of the Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Award. The Cafritz Foundation Award is an annual program to recognize and reward outstanding performance and exemplary service by DC Government employees.

Transportation Research Board, received the 2010 Raymond Von Dran Memorial Award during the 2010 Catholic University School of Library and Information Science annual Stone Lecture on April 20, 2010. The Von Dran award is presented annually by the SLIS Alumni Association, to recognize SLIS Alumni for outstanding innovation, collaboration, and leadership in the Library and Information Science profession.

Jessica Beauchamp (MSLS 2007), the 2009 2nd DC/SLA Vice President and Ethics Ambassador, is a recipient of the SLA Rising Starts honor. This honor is given to SLA members in the first five years of their library career who have shown exceptional accomplishment and potential for the future.Sharon Tahirkheli (MSLS 1989), director of information systems at the American Geological Institute, received the Mary B. Ansari Distinguished Service Award during the AGI's annual meeting. The award is given in recognition of contributions to the geoscience information profession.December 2009

Nancy Seeger (M.S.L.S. 1985) is now working as a cataloger and archivist in the Music Division at the Library of Congress.
Larry Roeder (M.S.L.S. 1977) is the U.N. Affairs Director for the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), and recently co-chaired an Ambassador's Briefing for the Group of 77 nations at the U.N. in New York. It focused on the need to protect livestock in order to protect the ability of poor people to have sustainable development. In addition, he is Editor in Chief of Climatecaucus.net, a network of NGOs interested in preventing further damage to climate. In December 2008, James King (M.S.L.S. 2002) was elected President-Elect of the Washington, D.C. Chapter of the Special Libraries Association. In March 2009, he accepted a position as the Information Architect at the National Institutes of Health Library. In March, he and his wife Carla were also selected to domestically adopt a 6 month old girl.
Jessica Perkins Storrs (M.S.L.S. 1996) is a Research Librarian at the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees in Washington, D.C.
Dave Davis (M.S.L.S. 1982) is completing his 15th year working as researcher and analyst at the Copyright Clearance Center in Danvers, Massachusetts.

Tim Edwards (M.S.L.S. 1990), Commad Librarian, Army Materiel Command, is now posted at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, as part of the HQ AMC-Forward group. HQ AMC is moving from Ft. Belvoir, VA to Redstone Arsenal, AL, as part of the BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) process. His career focus has been on virtual library systems, Sharepoint Portal development, and consortia purchasing involving 11 Scientific and Technical Libraries serving appoximately 10,000 Army Engineers and Scientists and an equal number of contractors worldwide.

Joanne She (formerly known as Joanne Qiong-fang), MSLS 1996, is Coordinator of the Department of Justice Legislative History Project, and Co-Chair of the Preservation and Digitization of the Federal Library & Information Center Committee (FLICC). She previously served as Head of Technical Services at the Maryland State Law Library (1999-2002) and as Project Manager at the National Library of Education (1997-1998). In June 2008 she received the "Civilian Award: Excellence in Individual Achievement" from the Federal Asian Pacific American Council.
Cameron Gowan (MSLS 2007) of Springfield, VA, was elected vice-president/president-elect of the Law Librarians Society of Washington, DC.
Four new members have been added to the CUA SLIS Alumni Board for the 2008-2009 board year: Fran White (MSLS 1998), Director of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology at Goucher College, who will serve as Vice-President/President Elect; Jenny O'Shea (MSLS 2008), a librarian at U.S. News and World Report, who will serve as a Director; Rachael Roan (MSLS 2008), a Librarian at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, who will serve as a Director; and Jennifer Krafchik (MSLS 2006), Collections Manager at Sewall-Belmont House and Museum, will serve as a Volunteer.

Dr. Linda K. Colding (MSLS 1994) recently became President of the American Library Association's Library Instruction Round Table (LIRT). Linda is an Associate University Librarian with the University of Central Florida Libraries in Orlando, Florida.
Christine Woods (MSLS 1994) of Hampton, VA, was presented with the Virginia Educational Media Association (VEMA) School Library Media Specialist of the Year Award for the York region of Virginia for 2007-2008. In November 2007 she received national board certification as a teacher in K-12 library media. She works as a teacher-librarian at Kecoughtan High School.
An article in the Wall Street Journal weekend section of Sept. 13-14, 2008 named five essential reference books for home libraries. The Yale Book of Quotations (Yale University Press, 2006), edited by Fred Shapiro (MSLS 1983), was named #2, behind only the World Almanac.

Edward M. "Ted" McClure (MSLS 2002), is a Public Services Librarian at Phoenix School of Law. He was recently appointed Co-Editor of the Aministrative Law Prof Blog (http://lawprofessors.typepad.com/adminlaw/).
Ted Doubek (MSLS 2006) passed away on August 13, 2008, at the age of 41. He had been working as a Cataloger at the National Library of Medicine. Nora Daly (MSLS 2007), Archivist, and Alyssa Strouse (MSLS 2007) work on the Archive and Information Resources Team for Rafael Vinoly Architects (RVA) PC, where they maintain physical and digital archives of all RVA materials with intrinsic historical or legal value. Nora works in the London office and Alyssa works in the New York City office of RVA.
Christine T. Carlson (MSLS 2007) accepted a position as Young Adult Librarian at the Salem Church Branch of the Central Rappahannock Regional Library in June 2008.
Frances Brillantine (MSLS 1992) is currently serving as the President of the Law Librarians' Society of Washington, DC. She presented a program called "Beyond Volume Count: Exploring the Evolving Tools for Evaluating Library Quality" at the AALL convention in Portland, Oregon, on July 14, 2008.
Fred Shapiro (MSLS 1983) was the subject of a front-page article in the New York Times on July 11, 2008. The article discussed his research for the Yale Book of Quotations (Yale University Press), specifically his discoveries about the origins of the "Serenity Prayer".

Sabrina Pacifici (MSLS 1982), editor of the monthly online journal LLRX, and the daily weblog beSpacific, received the Special Libraries Association's J.J. Keller Innovation in Technology Award, which is granted to an SLA member in good standing for innovative use and application of technology in a special library setting.
Carl Keehn (MSLS 1976) has been appointed Regional Librarian for the North Carolina Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped in Raleigh, North Carolina, effective June 16, 2008. From June 2007 to the present appointment, he had served as the Assistant Regional Librarian.
Bruce Rosenstein (MSLS 1987) authored an article in the Special Library Association's June 2008 issue of "Information Outlook," (Vol. 12, no. 6) called "Virtual SLA: Conference Experience in the Classroom." Bruce is a reference librarian at USA Today and an adjunct professor at CUA's School of Library and Information Science. Bruce also has a review of "The Adventures of Johnny Bunko: The Last Career Guide You'll Ever Need", by Daniel H. "A Legal Miscellanea," the newsletter for the Friends of the Jacob Burns Law Library of the George Washington University (GWU) Law School, which is edited by Jennie Carper Meade (MSLS 1988), is the 2008 winner of the American Association of Law Libraries/West-Thomson Excellence in Marketing Award in the Best Newsletter category. Jennie Meade is Director of Special Collections at the GWU Jacob Burns Law Library.

Cristina D. Ramirez (MSLS 2005) has been awarded the Beta Phi Mu Harold Lancour Scholarship for Foreign Study. She was also elected to ALA Council as ALA Councilor-at-Large, 2007-2010, and is about to complete the Leadership Metro Richmond, Leadership Quest Program, Theme: "Passion for Community" and will begin the LAMA (Library Administration and Management Association) Mentoring for Leadership Program.

Clare Imholtz (MSLS 1996) has co-authored a new bibliography published by Oak Knoll Press and the British Library, An Annotated International Bibliography Of Lewis Carroll's Sylvie And Bruno Books.
Eowana Bradley Jordan (MSLS 1988) reports that five years ago she retired from 32 years in public education, where she taught grades 1-5 for half her career, and served as an elementary school librarian for the rest. Since November 2007, she has returned to library work, serving as a high school librarian, and enjoys encountering students who remember her from her elementary school service.
Peggy Sullivan (MSLS 1953) received the Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award/Demco Award from the Illinois Library Association last year. She was named an Honorary Member of the American Library Association in 2008. She also served as American Library Association President in 1980-81 and received the CUA Alumni Achievement Award in 1985.
Fred R. Shapiro (MSLS 1983) is editor the "The Yale Book of Quotations" (Yale University Press, 2006). Shapiro wrote an Alumni Essay for the Fall 2007 CUA Magazine called "Who Said 'Go West, Young Man'?" available at: http://publicaffairs.cua.edu/cuamag/fall07/essay.html

Two SLIS alumni had career profiles in the cover story of the March 2008 (vol. 12, no. 3) issue of SLA's magazine, Information Outlook. The article "Four for the Air and the Sea" describes the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) libraries via interviews with SLA members who work at the NOAA libraries. The SLIS alumni interviewed were Stanley Elswick (MSLS 1989), NOAA Central Library's Bibliographic Database Manager; and Kathy Kelly (MSLS 1994), Marine Protected Areas Librarian and InfoCurrent Project Manager at NOAA Central Library.

SLIS welcomes Mr. Tim Steelman as our new Assistant Dean. Tim joins us from the Queen Anne School, where he served as Director of Academic Resources, Virtual Campus Division Head, and Webmaster. He is an alumnus of SLIS, and has been a member of the Adjunct Faculty since 2005. Dean Kelley welcomed Tim at the SLIS Holiday Party on December 3, saying, “He will provide rich experience for the school library media program, excellent Web skills to assist the School to continue to develop its Web presence, and skills to work with students effectively within SLIS. The School was in need of someone with Mr. Steelman’s skills and I am excited to welcome him!”
