  1. Explain how metadata contributes to the organization of Internet resources and the construction of digital collections. In addition, select one metadata standard and compare its elements to the conventional bibliographic standards such as MARC format.
  2. For many reference queries, keyword searches may be used to locate information. How necessary is it for all library science students to understand characteristics of different types of reference sources (e.g., encyclopedias, almanacs, dictionaries)?
  3. Since the mid 1990s, there has been discussion on the impact of electronic revolution on libraries. In what ways has there been a revolution in library services and the concept of the library? Explain the impact of information technology on two areas of library services and operations.
  4. Many libraries have implemented, or are in the process of implementing, digital reference services. Explain what digital reference service encompasses and the issues one must consider when planning for and implementing such services. Include in your answer your thoughts of how to effectively apply conventional face-to-face reference interview strategies in a digital reference environment.
  5. How could libraries identify and reach out to under-served populations such as an ethnic minority or a geographically isolated group? How could their needs be determined? What are some innovative services that might either attract the groups or meet their stated needs?
  6. As reference collections grow and change, it isn't always easy to decide whether to discard/delete or to retain materials. Discuss criteria you would recommend for: (a) a reference book collection only; and (b) a reference department page of web links only. Describe the general principles that underlie your decisions.
  7. With the development of Internet-based resources, it is important for librarians to promote information literacy. Describe three different approaches that librarians may take to teach information literacy.
  8. Protection of patrons' privacy is becoming more complex. Select a type of library and write a privacy policy. Include in your discussion patron records, automation, and other areas. Explain the pros and cons of handling patron privacy in the manner you suggested.
  9. Information retrieval is an important area of practice and research for library and information science. Describe how the elements of retrieval such as document representation, retrieval mechanism, and query terms are related to users' information needs. Discuss the importance of understanding the retrieval process in enhancing professional information services.
  10. With the increase of electronic journals, some libraries are canceling subscriptions to print journals and replacing physical copies with online subscriptions. Discuss the impact this action has on patron access, staff responsibilities, library services, and budget.
