"My experience was exceptionally stellar." - Fall 2004 Student

Experience is ultimately the only way to integrate the theories, skills and knowledge taught in the classroom with the real, daily operation of libraries. That is why the School of Library and Information Science offers students the opportunity to complete a practicum as part of their coursework. As the only library science school in Washington D.C., SLIS is uniquely positioned to offer internship or practicum experiences in world-class institutions. Our location in the nation's capital provides opportunites that simply aren't available anywhere else.

Some institutions offering practicum experiences to our students this year include the U.S. Department of Justice Library, the Library of Congress, The National Geographic Society, and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum Library, just to name a few. Please see the practicum opportunities page for a list of organizations currently seeking library science students for practicum experiences.

Practicum

Students who pursue a practicum earn three credit hours, are graded on a pass/fail basis, and must complete 120 hours of work under the supervision of a professional librarian. The hours of the practicum are arranged between the student and his or her supervisor.  Further details can be found on the practicum procedures page.
