CAREER SERVICES

Catholic University maintains an excellent Career Services office to help students and alumni secure employment after graduation. They are able to help students with resumes and cover letters and help them search for job openings. Alumni may also want to check out the Alumni Career Network for more information.

Job Postings Listserv (LIS-JOBS)
SLIS maintains a listserv for job postings. Many employers send job announcements to the school for distribution to students and alumni. Both current students and alumni are welcome and encouraged to join this list. Click here for directions on how to subscribe.

Cardinal Alert Job Announcements
Any SLIS student may sign up to recieve Cardinal Alert job announcements through their e-mail. These announcments will include only listings for librarians and related positions. To sign up, simply send an e-mail to careers@cua.edu and indicate that you would like to recieve the library science job announcements. You may remove yourself from the list at any time by sending a request to the same e-mail.

Advice from Faculty
Browse job ads to see what employers are looking for -- what are libraries looking for when hiring for jobs you'd like to have? Good web sites for job announcements are Library Job Postings on the Internet and Lisjobs.com. As you near graduation, check out these sites which also give advice on interviewing, information on salaries, etc., and see what the campus Career Services office has to offer

Also, get advice from other people -- beginning with your academic advisor, of course, but don't end there. Introduce yourself to some librarians who hold jobs you'd like to have and ask them what kind of background you'll need to do something similar. Talk with other members of the faculty, and be sure to include part-time faculty members as well. What suggestions do these people have?

One thing you'll almost certainly need is relevant work experience. Look for a practicum directly relelvant to what you want to do, preferably in a place that is going to look good on your resume, and be sure to include your practicum supervisor among your references when you apply for that first job!
